This clinic will enhance and evaluate your education, leadership, and teaching abilities within outdoor education programs and settings. Participants will engage in hands-on activities, group discussions, and practical exercises emphasizing outdoor learning.

Concluding the clinic, outdoor professionals who participate in both the virtual and in-person hours may apply for their Certified Outdoor Educator (COE) through the Wilderness Education Association (WEA), the most recognized international certifying body.

Who are my instructors?

WEA Certified Outdoor Educator Instructors will teach the clinic. Your instructors will provide insights into best practices for evaluating and assessing your participants, lesson planning, effective communication strategies, and, most importantly, feedback on your outdoor education techniques. Attendees will have the opportunity to connect with fellow outdoor professionals, share experiences, and collaborate on challenges faced in outdoor education.

Whether you are an outdoor educator, outdoor recreation professional, or park staff, this clinic provides a framework for inspiring others through outdoor education and leadership development.

In-person Topics

  • Discuss the educational components (WEA 6+1) and describe the associated outcomes

  • Practice the evaluation of outdoor skills and knowledge in outdoor settings.

  • Collaborate on best outdoor classroom management

  • Assess your outdoor education methods

  • Explore common field practices for conducting WEA courses including the Leader-of-the- Day and the Decision-making Journal

  • Share your unique outdoor education methods

  • Collaborate on outdoor education in your specific context

Virtual Topics - Only needed for COE applicants

  •  Examine the historical foundations and evolution of the WEA including organizational and curricular changes. 

  • Discuss the educational components (WEA 6+1) and describe the associated outcomes. 

  • Explain the role of the Components and Outcomes in the assessment of outdoor leaders. 

  • Equip participants with knowledge and skills to distinguish between each of the WEA Credentialing Programs. 

  • Clearly outline the steps and requirements for achieving and maintaining the Certified Outdoor Educator credential. 

  • Provide initial feedback for each participant on their progress along the COE professional path. 

  • Provide an overview of the administration and oversight for each of the WEA credentialing courses.

There are two pathways for this clinic:

(BOTH pathways must submit either a relevant work log or work experience upon registration)

WEA pathway: 30 hours

(6 hours virtual + 16 hours of WEA COE instruction + 8 hours of optional continuing education hours)

REQUIRED PATHWAY TO RECEIVE YOUR C.O.E. THROUGH THE WEA

GTG Outdoors pathway: 24 hours

(16 hours of WEA COE instruction + 8 hours of practical outdoor educator instruction)

Will receive a GTG Outdoors Educator certificate
